BAKAIA.

The uflual monthly meeting of this Board was held on February 2nd. Present —Messrs Fountaine, Bollitt, Mcllraith, and Wright. Mr Westenra being absent, it was resolved that Mr Fountaine take the chair. The Surveyor's report was read and considered. The following correspondence was read .—From the Selwyn County Council, informing the Board that the existing arrangement between .the Council and the Road Boards, respecting the registration of doge, will be continued for the year 1885, but unless the result for this year be more satisfactory, the Council will resume the registration. From the same, with reference to the destruction of small birds, and asking to be furnished with information as to what Sparrow Clubs • exist in the district, the number of birds and eggs destroyed, and the price paid for the same. The Clerk was directed to obtain the required information for the Council from the Chairmen of the Duusaniel and Hororata Sparrow Clubs. From Mr W. Stuart, asking for the ruts to be filled up on Stevenson road. The Surveyor stated that this work had been done. From Mr W. Btacey, asking for improvements en Aitken'a road. It was decided that the tussocks and thistles should be cleared off this road as far as Mr StaceyVi gate. The Surveyor reported that traffic was- completely stopped on the cutting which had been made partly on the road and partly on the railway reserve at the terrace near Bankside station, owing to the railway reserve having bees recently fenced at that point, and that there was not room to make a new cutting without removing the plantation fence, which encroaches about half-way across the road. Sesolved that the portion of the road which rune between the plantation and railway reserves, from Bankside station to the terrace, be dosed for wheel traffic until the Plantation Board can have the plantation fence removed to its proper line, or make arrangements with the railway authorities to allow the present cutting to be reserved as road. The Clerk- was directed to request the Plantation Board to take action in the matter as soon as possible, and in the meantime to give notice that traffic must go sound the plantation and use the cutting on the old railway reserve. It was decided to defer consideration of the proposed improvements on the upper portion of Steele's road aad other -works net particularly urgent nntil after the present harvest season. Besolved—That the small bridge on the lJowne road, opposite Mr Thwaite's residence, be rebuilt with concrete side walls, and that the Surveyor provide the necessary material as worn as possible, asd call

tenders for the work of constructing it ac Boon as the creek'is sufficiently dry to allow of the work being done. On the question of the proposed water supply for the land between the Selwyn and Hororata rivers being discussed, it was moved by Mr Bollett, seconded by Mr Mcllraith, and carried—" That the Council bo informed that the Board recommend the adoption of Mr Baker's report on the proposed headwork for this water service, and will contribute one half of tho cost of the work, provided the Council will furnish the other half." The. caretaker of the Hororata water-race attended with hia report, which was read and considered. Resolved—That the Council be requested to furnish the Board with a statement of expenditure, since August, 1883, of funds voted by the Board for water-race purposes. Mr Mcllraith gave notice that he would move, at the next meeting-"That the Board set apart the sum of £200 for the purpose of completing the Dunsandel and Eakaia branches of the Hororata water-race." After passing accounts, and settling other business, the Board adjourned.
