THE GENERAL ELECTION.
THE POLLING. CHRISTCHURCxIAND SUBURBS. The polling for the hew Parliament took place yesterday, and in the various electorates great activity prevailed, traps, carriages, Ac, being busily engaged in carrying voters for the different candidates to the polUng places. At the city and suburban poUing places great crowds assembled, and the voters as they came"up had to undergo a verbal fire of chaff, aU of which, however, was given and taken good humoredly. Sir Juliu3 Vogel's supporters pressed Mr A. J. White's large furniture van into the service, and had it plastered with emphatic appeals to the electors to vote for him. At the OddfeUows* Hall, where the battle for the seat for Christchurch South was waged fast and furious, there was a large gathering of cabs and carriages of all descriptions, and the utmost interest prevailed. At Heathcote also there was a good deal of excitement. The principal polling place was the Oddfellows' HaU, Woolston, and there was a very busy scene with cabs and carriages of of aU kinds constantly roUing up and depositing their loads of tho free and independent. Indeed throughout aU tbe electorates there was the keenest possible interest. So far as it is possible to be known the results of the poUing are as under throughout the colony. During last night extras were issued from the Press office, containing the results as they came to hand, and they were eagerly taken up by the large crowd which waited outside the office for some hours after the closing of the various polls. We give first the results in the various Canterbury electorates :— CHRISTCHURCH NORTH. Vogel 930 Crewes 223
