'> m ' ■■ 1 CUP MATCHES. c UNITED v ADDINGTON. , t The Addington men continued their . first innings, Messrs Ogier and Johnson a being sent in. The latter was, howeveA soon dismissed by Mr Boss. Ojper am Brown remained together some little tame but no material difference was made in thi j score, which only reached 92. In theii second attempt the Addington team farce 2 somewhat better, making 126. Out of thu number Mr W. Ogier scored 24 in rathet pretty style, and Messrs Wheatley and 9 Lusk succeeded in getting into double 1 figures, but as in the first innings t the bowling of Mr Boss waa again very ■' destructive. The Addington men worked ; very hard to make a good fight, and should ' —considering the amount of good raw material the club possesses, and particularly 1 from the fact that the Hon. E. C. J. Stevens has joined them, and gives them i valuable hints during batting practice— I very much improve before the season L closes. The following are the scores of th< match.— [ United C.C. [ W.V. Mr Halley, their new bowler, has, so far, been very successful, and with plenty of practice in matches against our best batsmen ought to become a first-class bowler. The batting of the Park men was notgood by any means on Saturday. Mr W. P. Beeves was certainly unfortunate in having to retire after playing the ball, and that ball just having sufficient impetus to roll to the wicket and dislodge the bail. Mr D. Dunlop also suffered the same fate. Mr Atkinson was run out—a very close I thing; and Mr Pocock was given I out leg before wicket from Halley, * who bowls left hand round the wicket, delivers right at the end of the crease, and, moreover, breaks back a good bit. Mr H. Loughnan carried hia bat out for 11, and Mr Morris surprised every one by actually showing signs of defence. The innings closed tor 103, or 82 runs behind. Perhaps in the return match the Park will make a bettor fight, as by that time, in all probability, its fiist eleven may be better organised. Scores of 1 entire match are as follow:— i MIDLAND. A second eleven at Lancaster Park, under the captaincy of Mr H. Cottorill, got rather a licking from the Christ's College onjfcheir own ground. The boys wont in first and scored 99. Harman 33, Hassal 19, and J. Hargreaves 31, batted in firstrate form, some of Hargreaves' on-driving and square leg hits beingpartieaJariygood, The Park team were aU dismissed for G* j Cotterill 10, not out, Perceval 11, being the principal scorers. Bhodes and Studholme bowl6d uncommonly well for the College. Bhodes' bowling was found pajs tieularly difficult to negotiate, his break from leg being a caution. J. Dunlop and THE MATOB AL ELECTION | TO THB KDITOB OX ,TH* I'RESS. ""'"'". I Sißi-Pray do give mc your advice, M ' am comparatively a poor man, and cannot afford legal advice. Life has actually become a burden; I ani sdmostwOTriecr out of existence. ;I had rather be a dog than be an elector and have a vote." **A free and independent elector," forsooth; there is nothing free nor independent abont it. I widi Old Nick himself got these confounded touters. One cannot walk down the street, or hardly stir out of the house, - but a fellow comes pestering one's life out with a burgess* roll in his hand—"Mr Blank, excuse mc, but I see your name on tho roll; will yon promise your vote and interest for my friend Mr Pomatum?" One has scarcely turned the corner before " acother turns up on the same lay for the same interest, and so on continually. I am told there are eight paid touters or canvassers, or whatever thoy are called, but my opinion is they are a nuisance, imd as such ought to be indicted. Is a man to lose his time, and perhaps a railway train or a tram-car, or important appointment, and all because Mr Pomatum waut3 to be Mayor of Christchurch ? I shall certainly vote the other side, if for no other reason than Mr Bell Topper had the manliness to propose to fight the battle on the merits of the individuals themselves, thereby carrying out the true spirit of the ballot. But* sir, coming back to the point, iia3 a man no redress? Is hiß life to be made miserable during an election time P la he to dodge round corners and cross muddy streets, bolt up a passage lor run over a nursegirl and perambulator, tin order to escape these intolerable pests P [Please give advice to a miserable unforlunate. 5 Yonrs.&c... ...... \ .
