The s.s. Wakatu arrived from Kaikoura and Wellington on Saturday night. She ' leaves to-day .on the return trip. The s.s. Orowaiti arrived yesterday from - Westport with 440 tons of coal; and the " s.s. Kawatiri arrived with 350 tons from the same port. Both vessels left Westport on last Friday afternoon, the Kawatiri a few minutes before the Orowaiti. The latter was first in port however. The Kawatiri tranships her cargo to the s.s. British King, as does also the Orowaiti, with the excep- " tion of about ISO tons, which is consigned to Timaru. If the British King make 3 a start from here next Saturday, as is fully expected, will she land her mails at Plymouth before the Catalonia, which left last Saturday? Seven days' start is no doubt heavily handicapping "the greyhound of the direct service," but there axe admirers with sufficient faith in the **"**>s to answer in the affirmative. Captain Kelly, it is said, modestly hopes to beat her by a few lengths, all being well. The steamship British King, which has just completed so successfully the first round voyage in the direct steam service, is fast loading, and will be despatched by the New Zealand Shipping Company punctually to advertised date. As has been previously mentioned the passenger accommodation of this vessel has been much improved upon, and those who book for London by her may be assured of a safe, speedy, and very comfortable passage home. From an abstract taken from her log of the last run home, ' the actual time her engines were working was 43 days 8 hours and 45 minutes, and her -* able commander, Captain John Kelly, hopes i Va even a better record this coming The abstract referred to shows _• to have run 6265 nautical miles irt to Bio Janeiro, 2691 miles "incent, 2262 miles from _th, and 295 miles from making the disGravesend, via Bio ,4,213 miles, or Ly ttel_ia the ports named, .-s_-» worth noticing in con»th the departure of the steamionia ori Saturday for London is _ftthe whaif drawing more water merchant vessel that ever left probably any other port in this _*Atmm**r" Her draught was exactly 25ft Bin aft arid 24ft 7ia forward. She steamed out from No. 4 jetty on Saturday morning, in charge of Captain McLellan, harbormaster, who proceeded with her aa far as off Camp Hay, where she anchored to await the '■ arriv-l of the sjs. Hawea with the northern ___Us. Having transhipped these after that steamer's arrival at 5.40 p.m., she ■weighed anchor and left at 6.45 p.m. for _ondon, via Rio Janeiro, St. Vincent* and * Plymouth. During her stay in port she •was visited by thousands of people, and it i 3 due to her worthy commander, Captain Cottier and his officers, to mention that the similarity his fine vessel gained was eh- * tanced by the very obligiag and courteous receptionaccorded toevery one that visited The Catalonia will beJols.s. British King on Saturday "next. — - ■
