[per pbbss association.! AUCKLAND, July 16. Wm. Atkinson, who accidentally fell down a lift in Firth's granary, died of hia injuries last night. The defendants in the recent Pufcekura ejectment case, E. B. Walker and party, intend having a writ of ejectment issued against the Natives whe proceeded against them for forcible entry a few months ago. An inquest is to be held on the Market House fire, at the request of the insurance companies. A meeting of ladies was held to-day m connection with the women's branch of the Gospel Temperance Mission, and was largely attended. Addresses were delivered by the ladies, and a petition was adopted for signature and presentation to the General Assembly, praying that it will pass into law a Local Option Extension Act that shall embody the power to vote by all women of this colony of mature age. A house to house canvass with the petition commences to-morrow. A liberal collection was made, and donations promised and given towards defraying the expenses of carrying out the project. . Much interest is awakening here re the frozen game question. Communications have been sent to Auckland and to Wellington companies inquiring upon what terms they would erect works here. Professor Black, reporting on a number of samples of alcoholic liquor seized by the police in Dunedin and country districts, says, that brandies ranged from proof to 33 under, whiskeys from 10 to 27 under, rums from proof to 30 under, gins about 22 under. He complains of the undue prevalence of table salt in beers, nearly all the brandies contained excessive quantities of tannin. The police intend prosecuting several hotelkeepers. The criminal sessions of the Supreme Court ended to-day, when George W. Minter, for embezzlement from the New Zealand Insurance Company, was found his second trial this session, first ijury having disagreed. At the last session hs was acquitted on a similar charge. At the B.M. Court 'George Mcßride sued Joseph Osmond, Mayor of South Dunedin, for £20, damages for assault and battery. This case arose out of the rowdy proceedings at the Borough Council meetings, and the alleged assault consisted in the plaintiff being removed by the police through defendant's orders. After hearing a lot of evidence July 16 . A man named John Eastwood has been committed for trial for stealing £4a from one McNeill, while the latter was drunk. A gold-mining company has been formed to work the Arethusa claim at Longwood, the company taking the name of the claim. The capital is JEIOOO, in thirty-six shares.
