The men are now employed in timbering the drive, but will resume breaking quartz in a day or two.

She Volunteers sicca their return from Parihaka have continued performing daily guard and picket duty, and will remain under military orders until duly paid off by the Government.

WELLINGTON, November 22. At the S.M. Court to-day four Chinamen were charged with playing fan tan, and were fined £5 eaeb. Ah Lung, for keeping a gambling house was fined £10 or a month's imprisonment. Eight Chinamen were also charged with being in a gambling house without a lawful excuse and discharged. At the Divorce Court decrees nisi were granted in the following oases :— Goldstein v Goldstein, Hornby v Hornby, and Milliohamp v Millichamp, all of .Dunedin; White v White, Wellington.

An extraordinary charge of forgery was heard at Otaki on Saturday before Messrs Simoox and Hadfield, J.P.'s. It appears i that a Maori named Kairapi Te Pake, on the oth of November last, made several attempts to get some cheques written out at his dictation, and found a man named Dodd, a wellknown settler, to accommodate him. The Native told Dodd that he had recently arrived from Waikato, where he had sold some land belonging to himself, and had received a cheque for £2700, but had lost it between Manawatu river and Waiwiwi stream. He asked Dodd to write him two cheques for £1000 each, one for £400, and a fourth one for £100. Two of the cheques were signed " Joseph Rhodes" and two " Charles Oompton." The Native told Dodd that if he did this he would give bun a cheque for £200 signed by himself as payment for his trouble. The latter consented and wrote out the- cheques, also receiving one signed for 02foO. The Maori tried to cash one of the cheques for the smaller amount, but was unsuccessful. The police meantime got wind of. the transaction, and shortly afterwards arrested Dodd on a charge of forgery, and accused was committed to trial at the Supreme Court, Wanganiri, bail being allowed, himself in £1000 and two sureties o-£so6>each. The Wellington racing privileges for the Spring Meeting were offered at auction today, but failed to find purchasers. They were sold privately subsequently. ; Shamrock is an additional entry for the 'Hurdles.

TIMABU, November 22. I The Canterbury Volunteers, under Captain Hamersly, on their return from the West Coast to-day, were accorded a very warm reception. ' The streets were crowded with people, between 2000- and 3000 being present. They were met at the station by a committee, and afterward* entertained at luncheon at Mr Jones'auction rooms, where speeches of a eulogistic nature were indulged in. The Temoka and Ashburton contingent, who came on here, returned to their homes by the la_t_train.

A fire broke out this evening in Messrs Wood and Smith's shop, George street, but water from the mains waa at once played on it, and the flames were soon subdued.

DUNEDIN, November 22. ; The Mosgiel woollen factory net a profit of £6930 for the year. They declare _ dividend Of-10 per cent, carrying forward £4400. » Dr.. Borrows, who wm injured last [week by bis horse bolting, died this afternoon. He had served for some years in the Navy, and had charge of the hospital at .Bermuda While on the station there.
