Returns on this subjeot have been presented in compliance with an order of the House of Commons. The number of bushels of malt oharged with duty in the year 1878 in England was 52,210,214, the amount of duty oharged thereon being £7,081,010; in 1879 the number of bushels charged with duty was 46,009,872, and the duty £6,240,088. In Scotland the amount of duty was, in 1878,

£423,646; in 1879, £362,020. In Ireland, in 1878, the duty was £462,855; in 1879, £392,151. The total for the United Kingdom shows, in 1878/58,752,934 bushels, with ££967,512. duty ,' £ while in 187&-the quantity wasJsl,676,Baobußhels,-and;theduty , £6,994,259. An account of the quantities of barley imported into the United Kingdom in the years 1878 and 1879 shows that in. 1878 the quantity so imported • was. 14,156 9190wt.', equivalent in quarters to 3,963,937 } while in 1879 the quantity- 1 was 1ii5_6,81-ot»f.,' equivalent to 3,232,968 quarters. The following returns give the sugar consumed in breweries in the year ending September 30th, 1878 and 1879:—1n 1878, in London, 40,883,1441b; in the provinces, 77,221,3031b; in Scotland, 886,4281b; in Ireland, 6,451,1161b; total in the United Kingdom, 125,441,9911b. In 1879, the sugar so consumed was in London,' 38,090,5131b; in the provinces, 78,597,2131b; in Sootland, 668,8381b; in Ireland, 4,570,4301b; total in the United Kingdom, 116,927,0191b.
