CHRISTCHURCH. WXDVtSDAt, OorOBEB 1. [Before G. L. Melliah, Esq., H.M.] Fos6—iv _b_> TJ—aca_re.—James Hamilton was charged with forging and uttering* promissory note for £37, with intent to defraud. Mr _. D. Thomas appeared for the ace—od,ar—stated that be __X_omaaMi—Hay whose name was endorsed on the promissory note, had been m partnership, hat had lately been bankrupt. »__sr was—able to write,, and had authorised his partner to sign hss name to bills for money which was jointly owing by them. The promissory note in queefaom had been endorsed by the accused i

by virtue of this agreement,."* payment of a bill of £37 due to the proseoutor, who had made himself an—rerable for goods obtained by the accused. Being subsequently sued in the Ashburton Rmdent Magistrate's Court for thevalue of the goods, the prose outer had had to pay the money, and the promissory note with Milner's name on the bach had been given him by the accused to recoup him for the loss. The evidence of Thomas Milner who waa put 'in the witness-box, corroborated these facts, and he moreover said that if he and his partner had not gone bankrupt the bill would have been paid in due course, as his name had been endorsed by his partner with his full authority. When asked by the police if the signature on the promissory note was his, he had answered in the negative being at the time in ignorance of the contents of the note. "As it was obvious that no fraud had been intended, the Bench at once dismissed the case.

G_——m akd Ldbb—V—3— —It is interesting (taja the "Timara Herald"), under the present circumstances, to call to mind <he promises made by s—idry candidates whilst on the hustings, that they would " respectfully request Sir George Grey to resign," and that thty would support any other leader who would adopt the liberal me—urea. Sir Geo. Grey is obviously at this moment the only obstruction to the passage of the liberal measures. The leader of the Opposition has pledged himself oud his party, who ore in a majority in the House, to adopt those measures, atd the Hon. John Hall's pledges differ from Sir George Grey's in that they can be confidently depended on. Yet we do not hear of Sir George Grey being " respectfully requested to resign," nor of those great champions of the liberal measures giving their support to the only leader who cm carry them out. What intrigues may be going ou within the Government party we do not know, bnt we do know that men who have promised the eleotors to sever themselves from Sir Geo. Grey and to follow anyone else who will adopt the liberal programme, are still clinging closely to Sir George Grey long after all ohance of his carrying those measures has passed away. We afways were oonvinced that Greyism and Liberalism—that is to say the Liberalism of the hnstingg—were one and the same thing, and the events of the last week have proved beyond doubt that auoh is the caie.
