MELANCHOLY SUICIDE.

A melancholy case of death by drowning « has ocourred within the past week, and from * the oiroumstances surrounding it, there c appears to be no doubt but that the deceased J destroyed himself. At about two o'clock j yesterday afternoon a boy named William t Bobb informed Constable Norgate, whom he t met in the street,.that the body of a man was 4 lying in the river. On proceeding to the spot indicated, about four chains below the Madras street bridge, the constable saw the z body lying at the bottom of the river in about five feet of- water. He at once obtained ? assistance, got tb-rtrady out of the river, and c took it to the Foresters' Arms Hotel, where f it'now lies. From.papers found on decerned, t it was ascertained'that he was a young man f named Bush, who had been in Christchurch v for some. time. The body was also identified t< by Detective Walker, who knew Bush toler- a ably well. .In the pockets of his clothes were a found—two tobacco pouches, a pipe, two °. studs, a pocket knife, a key, one penny, one die, and sundry papers. Among the documents was a letter addressed to F. W. Bush, 4 Esq, Old Square, Lincoln's Inn, London, and - running as follows ■:— 1 Christchurch, April 21st, 1879. J My Dear Father, —I .'received, your, letter I by the last mail a few days ago, and was grieved a to find that you refused to afford mc any assist- tl ance. I now tell .you that my last penny .is w gone, and lam in. debt to the amount of a few fi pounds. Before this letter speeds on its way, I d hope to be in a place where no money is re- c quired, and you will be rid of one that you liked i in days gone by to call son. It is not for myself, t but my wife and obild, that I implore assistance a from you. I hope you will think kindly of mc, d and believe mc to be . ' Your affectionate son, . Fbank W. Bush:. Please give mytkind love to all at home. .
