BOARD OF HEALTH.

♦ -. The adjourned meeting of the Local Board of Health took place this morning. There were present—Messrs Harman (in the chair), Hobbs, Tancred, Boss, and Brown. j The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. - ikspectob's bbpobt. The report of the inspector was read as follows : — 1. I beg to report that the notice served on Mr Hunter to abate a nuisance arising from the keeping of pigs on his premises at St. Albans, has been complied with. 2. In accordance with notice, steps have been taken to prevent the sewage from the waterclosets on the Convent premises, Barbadoes street, flowing into the South drain. The South drain has been cleaned out. 3. Notice has been given to the schoolmaster of Christ's College respecting tke closets and latrines, and the matter is receiving attention. 4. Notice has been given to Mr Knowles to abate a nuisance arising from a defective draion premises situate in Harper street, Sydenham, and the work is in progress. 5. Considerable annoyance was caused by a dead horse having been suffered to remain from Friday till Monday last, on a section of land near Stanmore Bridge owned by Mr B. Walls. I employed Mr Brightling to remove it as soon as possible, and hare demanded the cost of removal from the owner of the land. 6. I desire instructions from the Board in reference to the foul drainage on the South belt, near the Crown Hotel, and on the East belt, near Mr Manning's residence. 7. I beg to report a nuisance arising from a defective artesian well and drain on premises of Mrßradwell, old Stanmore road, and I desire the authority of the Board for servimg notice nnderc_a--_s9oftheAct. ■ 8. Typhoid fever has been reported from two houses which are drained by the sWe channel in Allen street. Chiistchureh. In both cases the tenants attribute the sickness to the condition of that channel, whicbia very bad indeed. WX. f-U-BCE, Chief Inspector of Nuisances. The following letters received since last i meeting were read :— A letter was received from the town clerk, acknowledging receipt of a letter from the Board, covering Dr. Powell's report on dry gullies and depressions within the city, and stating that the City Council had referred the report to the sanitary committee to consider and report upon. From Mr G. H. Morley, of Cooper's road, conveying the notification that his child was suffering from diphtheria. I The writer also said ho had lost two children from sickness previously, and attributed the unhe-lthiness of the lqcaKty to the nuisanoe caused jy the existence of piggeries in that vicinity, and Chinese gardens, which were made a repository for all sorts of filth and refuse. The former nuisance was being attended to, but not the latter. The writer was anxious to be understood as not desiring to reflect upon the inspector. __ Mr Brown confirmed the statement that sickness was prevalent in th* locality. It appeared that the Chinamen had been putting fish on their ground, from which a rely objectionable stench arose. After some little discussion it was resolved that the inspector should take steps to see that the nuisance was abated. From James Burbury, calling attention to a nuisance on the premises of Stephen Lawrence, at the corner of Third street, Colombo road. The inspector explained that the nuisance had been since remored. IH__OTIOUS DIBEASBB. The following is a list of tbe cases of infectious diseases reported to the Board of Health since last meeting of the Board on March 31st, 1879:—Typhoid, 33; diphtheria, 9.
