Wijb Desertion.—William Lancaster, remanded from Wellington, was charged: with neglecting to provide hie wife with proper mean* of support. Mrs Lancaster stated that the had five children, and her husband left her on the 28th of last December. Since
then ehe bad received two letters from him, but no assistance farther than £1 daring the past cix months, from the statement of Sergeant Moriee it appeared that the defendant, a clerk, wa*, comparatively epeaking, a new arrival, and his present position was entirely owing to hie lazy habits and love of drink. Mrs Lancaster stated 1 that she wonld be satisfied if the Bench would grant her a married woman's , protection order. • jThe Bench sentenced ' the defendant to one months' imprisonment with hard labor, and ordered him to pay per. week for- the maintenance of his wife And family when he came out of gaol.'
