_ Wah_g* tji, March 23. A meeting of Natives, summooed by a chief named Paora Tutauwhau. was hefd"here yesterday afternoon, t ■> consider TeWbiti'a action re the Waimate Plains. _ The speeches were of a pacific nature, the various speakers urging open their people not to countenance TVWhiti's proceedings, but rather to quietly dispose of their h—d to the Government, who would-pay them for it. It was, however, maintained, with regard to the Waama'-e Plains, that Sir Donald McLean had promised to give a certain portion of it back, and pay a certain sum per acre for all that was taken. W__ihgton, March 28. Ii is understood that the Government, in selling 16,000 acres in tho Waimate plains, will ] depart somewhat from their original plan. It is now felt that the main object in view is to pat settlers ou the land. 8000 acres of the block to be offered for sale will therefore be disposed of on deferred payments, and- the rema—der sold by auction for cash. Telegrama from wen-known settlers in tr-e Patea district express the utmost confidence that the land will be eagerly bid for and fetch excellent prices. It is stated that the settlers between Patea nnd the Waingongora express themselves confident of protecting their district, but at the same time request the Government to supply them with arms. — — denied that there ia any truth in the report which has been put about that the Government intend sending militia and volunteers up to the pbuna. Mr Sheet-— aad Major Brown return to Op_ _ki to-morrow. Hawsba, March 28. AllthoW—rrate Plains surveyors have been sent np the Mountain road to survey some confiscated land on the Chester line, about which there is no dispute. Natives and European g are aa-dously awaiting Mr Sheeban's arrival, and much satisfaction is felt at the announcement that he la coming here at once. j
