The failure of Mr Saunders, a merchant, in the early part of the week, caused considerable surprise. The loss will fall principally on Christchurch ma-chants, as all are interested to an extent. The land ia all heavfly mortgaged, and the estate very tench complicated. On paper the estate looks well, bnt the general opinion is, that when realised, it will perhaps pay ?sia the—. Sugars—NoShing doing beyond a parcel of brewers' crystals, which has been taken up at _£ J Os- Henneesy 's bulk and case brandies are getting low in stock, and sell readily at 10a and Sis respectively. The asual trade sates have taken place ia other lines of spirits at current rates. Bass's bulk ale—Fas-ther sa'es are reported at £9 5s to £3 15s. A small lot of Sent hops has been cleared at Is 4sd; American growth <|»riß_), Is; Nelson (new) have found buyers at 10— Caustic Soda—A parcel of five toss " Bed Heart" brand has been sold at -322, debvered in Chrbtchurch. Kerosene—Business to the extent of 800 cases D__soud has come under our notice, at Whi, i.b. At auction sale of general merch-—iise, held on Wednesday, very lii-fe was done, biddings fi-t. The only roods diipised of were —10 balos cornsacks, at 7s 63, in Lyttelton; 150 cases D—-ond oil, at 10_d, ib.; 20 h—f-chests tea, at Is 4d, i.b.; and 15t» pockets grey sugar, at £31 10s, i.b. The Buttermera arrived from Calcutta via Port Chalmers, with part of original cargo fof 6_cks, e_, _c. We understand this vessel has been bad on the berth for London, and will take & cargo of wheat.
