\ Thuesday, Mabch 27. (Before G. L. Mellisb, Esq., 8.M.) Axlkgbd Absoh.—lsidore Schwarts was brought up, on remand, charged with arson. Counsel on either side asked for a further adjournment of the case till Thursday next. FIISB Phbxekces.—Herman Bose, who had been brought from Mr Thomas's, Oarnaru, on the evening previous, was charged with having obtained a gold watch by means of a valueless cheque. Tho Inspector asked for a remand, as the evidence for the prosecution was not complete. Mr Thomas, who appeared for prisoner, asked for bail. The Bench granted the remand, also allowing bail, namely, two sureties of £50 each. ' " liABCEny/. — George Wright and James Allen were charged with larceny of a bag of wheat, valued at 10a. Mr AUerton, station j master at Hornby, deposed that on last Sunday evening he was walking out between six and seven, and saw a bag of wheat lying by the raUway line. Gave information to the police on Monday, but when he went again with a constable, the wheat was gone, there being simply traces of it leading frem the line. Went to Bay's training stables and asked for the grain. Mr Bay acknowledged that the sack of grain was there. He explained that the boys came to him with infor* mation that a saok of grain was lying on the line, and he (Ray) told them that they had better fetch it in, as there was no use in permitting it to lie there. Mr Thomas stated the circumstances of the case, from whioh it appeared that there had been no intention to deprive the owner of his property, and that no concealment had been attempted. Tbe inspector admitted there was no case against the 'boys' j intimating that it was likely he should proceed against Mr Bay. The boys were then discharged. A Yo-Jire Thiep.—Annie Smith, a little girl, about twelve years of age, was charged: with stealing a miscellaneous assortment of goods, valued at 12s Id, from the store- of : Mrs Bell. The evidence went to prove the: offenoe, which the prisoner subsequently admitted. The court bailiff stated that the child's father was dead, and tho mother, with her grown-up daughters, bad for come years past been leading a disreputable life on the Biver Bed. The bench ordered defendant to be sent to the Industrial School for a period of three years.
