THE COLAC SHORTHORNS.

[Melbourne "ArguSi" January 7] The sixth annual sale of Messrs Bobertsbn Brothes* tho thorn and Hereford cattle was held on January 3rd,under the management of Me:srs Bkbartl Gibson and Co., of Melbourne. Mr Chas. Lynott officiated, as ou ail previms occasions, as auctioneer. The total attendance of visitors was about 500, which is very much below the Col»c standard. 3Jr Lynoti mounted the rostrum at 1 o'clock, and shortly afterwards commenced tfce sale . In hia introductory remarks the unfavorable conditions nnder which theeverst was about to fee he.d were recognised. Mr Lynott said that the Me-itrs Bobertson were fully prepared to accept the consequences of those conditions ia the shape of the much lower

prices that appeared to be inevitable, and that, I regret to say, wero realised to a decree that could hardly hire been anticipated. The terms of sale were the s:\uie aa tho=e which have gained for Mfssrs Bobertson the reputation of extreme liberality. All the shorthorns were warranted breeders, aad the principle of allowing every animal to go when a bid ; ■was made was strictly adhered to. Messrs ' Robertson haTe thus nobly kept faith with the public, so that buyers fromother colonies might not be disappointed. The cattle were brought out in excellent style. The first lot was the Geelong champion bull, 26S Dnke of Derrimut. He was started at 50 imineas, and after a dragging competition, fell to the hid of Mr W. I. Winter for 27 •» guineas—the highest fissure of the day in bulla. The nest lot, Karl of Derrimut, revised 100 guineas, bid of Mr T. C. Murray, of *be Warrions. Altogether nine bulb made .£IOSO, or an average of -£llt> 13s 4d. The cows fared slightly better, but the drop even there was immoderate 4 the champion of Geekteg aad ile'bourno, 80th Duchess of Derrimut, which could ppi§ibly not be equalled of her aga in the colonies, has gone to enrich the herd of Mr W.. J. Clarke, at the modest sum of 350 guineas. Mr Simpson, of the Northern Island of New Zealaud, obtained several grand bargains in heifers, and purchased some lots of high quality. The seven females made an average of ,£198155. This completed the sale of stud stock. The station stock, sold proportionately better than the stud stock, but bulla were not in demand, and. of .the cows sovera! lots were in. The Hereford cows and heifers realised l»Ba than beef prices. The summary of. results was asf oilows:—Nine . shorthorn stud bulls averaged .£ll6 13s 4d," equal to .£1050;,7. do heifers, £198 15a, equal to £1391 sa; 7i pure shorthorn bulls averaged £\7 5s 3d. equal to £1225 17s 6d; 31 heifers, ,£34 2s 7d, equal to .£1126 2s 6d; 108 Hereford cows and heifers mode £688 5s 6d.
