THE AKAWATA IS COLLISION.
When the steamship Arvwata was coming down Hobson's Bay on her way to New Zealand this time, a brie came into violent with her. carrying away her ran and stanncbeons. It appeals that the Arawaia hid to stop her engines, owing to one of the beuing* gettiui? heatcl. Shortly afterwords, according to a eport which appears in the Wellington papers, a brig- nvaed Albert the Good was observed standing orer towards the Arawata, as if to cross her bows. Apparently, however, those on board the brig the steamer was still movinc: ahead, and that they woald be unable to cross her bows, as her helm was pat up as it they intended to pass aster a of the steamer. Captain "Underwood sseiuffth-it a collision wis imminent if the hrfcr continued on her coarse, toM the engineer to start the engine ahevl,and also hailed to the hag to pnt her helm down. This order was not obeyed until too late, and the result was that the trie struct the Ar&wat* in an oblique direction with greji farce. Unfortunately two people oa beard the Arawaia were injured. headgear much damag-ed, and her cutwater stove in. The Arawata proceeded on her voyage, and when she arrived at Port Chalmers some repairs were effected to her, which will be completed on her return to that place.
