Sentence was deferred. The Primitive' Methodists' Conference has closed. The increase for the pact year is represented by two ministers, 120 members, and church property to the amount of £4000. The Rev. Mr Dean was appointed editor of the connectionalpaper and general secretary, to reside in WeJUngton. Replying to a statement published that Colonel Whitmore was about to retire from the Cabinet in order to assume the office of Chief Commissioner of the Armed Constabulary, the " Poet" eaye:—" Owing to Colonel Mottle's resignation Bβ Chief Commissioner of Armed Constabulary, a difficulty arise* inperforming certain official act* required to be done in conformity to law by the cotnanii jiouer* It has, therefore, been arranged that such duties ac previously devolved upton the commiieioner will now be added to those of Minister of Defence for the time being. Colonel Whitmore will, therefore, be gazetted Commissioner of Armed Constabulary in addition to his present portfolio of Colonial Secretary, but will reoeive no salary or allowance in connection with the former office. This arrangement as to the Commisstonerebip ef Armed Constabulary will continue co long only as Colonel Whitmore remeins a member of the present Government.
