SWIMMING BACES.

I The second series of swimming races were inaugurated at the Corporation Botha on Saturday, when there was a good attendance of spectators. Both Kaiapoi and Lyttelton sent their representatives for the great event of the day—viz., the 300 Yards race, open to all recognised amateurs, the winner being Mr W. T. Taylor, of Lyttelton, Mr Clarkson being a good second. The Boys' Handicap race was won by T. Childs, who received two secondstart. The Men's race, for a siver plated cup, was won by Mr Clarkson, with Mr Smith second; and the Youths' race, by G. Wright. The following is an account of the results of the v—rious races : — Boys' Handicap Race—One length of baths. Prize, a handsome book. FIRST HEAT. R. C. Haggarty, 15 seconds start 1 G. Cole (Lyttelton) 7 sees. do. 2 W. Q-oodyer, scratch 3 R. Gilkes, 5 seconds ... ... 0 A. Dallas, 10 seconds .. ... 0 W. Johnson, 10 seconds 0 SECOND HEAT. G. Wright, scratch } T. Haggarty 0 J. Cole ... 0 G. Cole ... .„ ... ... O This was a splendid race, Childs winning by about two feet from Wright, Haggarty a good third. In the second heat three of the competitors swam a dead heat, which proves that the handicapping was not far wrong, -tar's Race—Four lengths of bath. Prize, a silver-plated cup. G. Clarkson (Christchurch) ... 1 C. Smith (Kaiapoi) ... ... 2 Clarkson had the race in hand from the start, and eventually won as he liked by half a length. Youths' Race—Three lengths of bath. Prize, a silver pencil case. G. Wright 1 T. Childs 2 W. Fox 3 G.Cole 0 This was another well contested race, Wright winning by a few yards. Men's Race— Six lengths of bat—. Ist prize, opera glass ; 2nd, tobacco jar. W. T. Taylor (Lyttelton) ... 1 G. Clarkson (Christchurch) ... 2 G. Wright (Kaiapoi) 3 J. Brown 0 At the report of the pistol Taylor waa first to take the water, followed by Wright and Brown. Clarkson put on a magnificent side stroke, and collared the lot in the first length, but gradually falling behind he was last in the second length, Taylor leading, with Brown second, and Wright third. This order was maintained till the fifth length, when Clarkson shot ahead, and came in a good second to Taylor. The rest in the order given. Boys' Race—Distance, two lengths of the baths.
