ABHLEY.

The Ashley Road Board held its monthly meeting on Thursday last Present—All the member*. The clerk and surveyor reported correspondence with Mr Pemberton and Mr Clarke, re land purchased by the Board for roads, and conveyance of the same. That a portion of this was done, and other in progresa Also with Captain Milton and Mr Tipping, re a catting into the Ashley river bed at trig, pole gaily on Birch Hill inn, on request for their special benefit. That Captain Mil lon had offered to contribute £10 towards cost, Mr Tipping declining to assist. The Board directed that tenders be invited for the work. Also a letter from the Minister for Public Works, advising payment payment of moiety of contribution for current six months, with the understanding that the Board construct approaches to the Ashley Gorge bridge, Glentui, erected by Messrs Richardson and Co. The Board desired to know from the Public Works department full particulars of the work expected in this costly undertaking. He further reported on trees obtained from the Government, and the planting now being made in the office reserve. Also on various :>ther matters of minor character. Tenders [or works advertised being opened and con 3idered, the lowest tender in each case was accepted. After some discussion on the new ratepayers' roll, required by the Boads Ordinance to be exhibited on the first week in September, the valuer of the district for 3evezal years past was instructed to prepare the new valuation and roll for the coming pear. The following new worka were derided on, and tenders invited for same, viz : —Shingling on White Bock road, between the Grey river and Karetu creek ; shingling an Bueh or Grey Quarry road ; shingling on Birch Hill road ; forming on Footbridge road ; forming on Hodgson's North road ; i stone culvert on Upritchard's creek. Several other works being petitioned for by those specially interested, the Board determined to meet the surveyor on some of these on an early day, and decide whether or aot these should be done. The proposed Counties Bill, just to hand, was commented an, and unhesitatingly denounced ; but the precise action to be taken to be further considered. After passing accounts, amounting to £64 4s 10d, the Board adjourned. <
