Auckland, Mayls. Thomas Eennington and George Lane, two seamen on the American whaler Tamerlane, at Bnssell, attempted to swim ashore to desert. Lane sank and was drowned within a hundred yards of the beach. Bennington was subsequently found sitting on a rock in an exhausted state. The Co-operative Meat Supply Company has brought down the price of meat 20 per cent. Wellington, May 15. A Gazette extraordinary issued to-day prorogues Parliament from the 30th May to the 30th June. Poet Chalmers, May 16. Arrived—The Portuguese ship Alva, from Hong Kong, with 300 Chinese immigrants. The Vice-regal party and Superintendent of Otago paid a visit to Port Chalm era at noon. Bluff, May 15. The Omeo, Captain Calder, left Melbourne at 2.30 p.m. on the Bth and on the 13th experienced strong gales from the N. and N.E., with a heavy sea. She had to heaveto on account of the large number of stock on board. She arrived at the Bluff at 8 a.m. on the 15th. She brings eighteen saloon and thirty steerage passengers, ninety-seven horses, twenty sheep, and 260 tons of cargo for all ports. She sails for Dunedin at 4 p.m. to-day. Passengers for Lyttelton—Mr Sibley, Miss Holly, Rev F. A. Hare, and five in the steerage, and thirty-five tons of cargo. She will probably return from Lyttelton to Melbourne via Bluff.
