Edscational. TJOABD OF EDUCATION PUBLIC SCHOLARSHIPS. The Board of Education hereby give notice, that on the dates hereinafter fixed Pnblic Examinations will be held by Examiners appointed by the Board, of Candidates desirous of competing for the Scholarships mentioned below, under the following regulations :— The Scholarships to be ten in number each to be of the value of £40 per annum, tenable for two years, provided funds for that purpose be voted by the Provincial Council. (a.) Two of these scholarships will be open to all boys whose age does not exceed eleven years, and to all girls whose age does not exceed twelve years, on the 2nd day of June, the first day of examination. (&."> Two of these scholarships will be open to all boys whose age does not exceed twelve years, and to all girls whose age does not exceed thirteen years, on the 2nd day of June, the first day of examination, (c.) Two scholarships will be open to all boys whose age does not exceed thirteen years, and to all girls whose age does not exceed fourteen years, on the 2nd day of June, the first day of examination. (d.) Two scholarships will be open to all boys whose age does not exceed fourteen years on the 9th day of June, the first day of examination. The remaining two scholarships will be applied to Classes A, B, and C, according to the number of candidates in the respective classes. The proceeds of the scholarships will be available only as a contribution towards expenses of tuition, board, lodging, and other expenses, at some school to be approved of by the Board. Those boys and girls desirous of competing must give notice in their own handwriting to the Chairman of the Board of Education, on or before the 19th day of May, stating their age and the school at which they attend. In case they attend no school their residence must be named. The examination will take place at Christchurch, and all necessary expenses for travelling and for board and lodging, incurred by the candidates, -mill be defrayed by the Board. Tbe Board reserves to itself t_e right of requiring proof as to the age of any candidate. No scholarship will be awarded to any candidate who has not obtained 25 per cent of the marks available in each subject. Candidates for scholarships as above described under the letters A, B, and U, will be examined on the following subjects :— Spelling Beading Writing Arithmetic English Grammar Composition Geography History—Sacred and Profane Candidates for Scholarships open to all boys under fourteen years of age, described under the letter D, will be examined on the following subjects :— English Grammar and Composition, including spelling Arithmetic Geometry and Algebra TT.- of -_ f Ancient and Modern *"BT-ory | Sflcred and Proftuie Geography—Physical and Political By order, F.
