DEODOBISATION OF THE MANURE DEPOT.

TO THE EDITOR OP THE PBESS. Sis, —I remember a clergyman some time back, when speaking of another nuisance, said it was a dirty thing, and we had better shut our eyes to it. Now, in my opinion, shutting our eyes and mouth. &c, is not the best way to abate an evil. And as there is wisdom in a multitude, &c, is my excuse for giving an opinion for what it is worth, if you do not think it cumbering your space. I do not think it practicable, here at least, to convert it into gas, nor have we a Peisse and Lubin to utilise it; nor do I think, after the loss of one scientific life, it would be advisable to mix it even with lime, for I eoneider that the men who disturb the mass may as well sign their death warrant as inhale the exhalations during the process. Charcoal in any shape (wood ashes) is about the best deodoriser; and there is a large quantity of gorse in the immediate neighbourhood which I am sure the Koad Board would be glad to be rid of, and gorse hedges, cut down, would be an advantage to their owners, as they would grow up again green and fresh. I think that if the City Council could arrange with the owners of the hedges and the Road Board, three men, a horse, and spare chain, with a length of light rope, might cut enough gorse to

cover the whole space of oue pit in two J days (and tluit without walking over it). ! which, beiuj.' lin- iv. would ;_;ivts suli- ; cient aih tv be washed i.j by oi;e ol ; the firc-engiu s in the eviui of theie bcitijr j no rain. If itiero was some peat rnixeti | with the gorse, so much the better. I am told there is socue at hand. The washing iv is to preveut the ashes from being blown away, as they are Very li<jht I ihiuk by the above method I could destroy the whole of the ill-effects likely to arise from the miasmatic gases in a week or ten days at most. The burning of the gorse itself would havH an immediate beneficial effect. And again, the means are perfectly safe to those employed. It being so, and its simplicity, together with the speed with which it m»y be accomplished, are the chief reasons which induce mc to offer an opinion. Yours, &c, Ojl© Peactical. December 26, 1574.
