DESCRIPTION OF IMMIGRANTS.
TO THE EDITOB OF THE PBESS.
Sib, —A friend of mine and myself were reading the shipping report of the arrival of the Carnatic at Port Chalmers, copied into your issue of this morning from the " Daily Times" of 2nd inst., and were both disgusted at the style and manner of his reference to the immigrants,- which feeling will no doubt be shared in by most of the readers thereof. That elegant reporter says : " The ship has 251 living souls " on board, besides ber crew of thirty "'men" aud "boys." He then proceeds to 1 describe the ship as being a "fine substantial wooden built ship," giving a good description of her qualifications ; but when he again comes in contact with his fellowbeings, he describes them in language that would furnish Mrs Beecher Stowe with materials for a two volume publication, 'or produce a fine commotion in Exeter Hall. An extract will speak for ilpelf—"The immigrants thronged the side of the ship when the Result went alongside/ They appeared to be a ' tolerably fair sample,' not of the best certainly, but possessing ' bone and sinew,' and seemingly in hearty condition." What a nice gentlemanly report; how it must cheer up each and every one of the " living souls " to find themselves described in the same manner as a mob of working bullocks, or a herd of newly bought slaves, and this in the land of their adoption upon their arrival. Excuse the space for this and oblige, Yours, kc, Abgtjs.
