Asmeeting of this committee was held on Tueeday last. Cγ Craig moved, Cr Beharrell seconded — "That the accounts—foreman's salary. £3 16s lid ; petty cash, £3; insurance, "£3; atid pay-sheet, 16s 6d ; amounting to £10 13s 5d —be passed.'.' " The Mayor, referring r to'the ; - aooltsh ihg of the tolls on the swing bridge, said he had seen the Provincial Government, and had no doubt but they would 1 act fairly towards the Council in giving them a grant towards the maintenance of the main roads in the borough; It was possible the tolls would be done away with at the end of Mr Veysey's contract, in three or four months, or probably sooner, but he had not communicated with the Government as to this part of the question,.though . he:should wait upon them in reference thereto. Cr Blackwell moved and Cr Craig seconded, " That two hooks on 18ft poles be purchased fox rescuing drowning persons, and kept in some public, place near the river.'!. ' Cr Taylor suggested the purchase of life buoys also. , . ~ ; The Mayor gave his Jopinions ; that the hooks would be more serviceable than the drags kept at the police depot. The Provincial Council had voted £200 for erection of a morgue and purchase of proper appliances, but iv the meantime 7 the expense of the hooks Would not be great. ' Motion'pnt and agreed to. . After some discussion relative to the tramways, Cγ Blackwell moved, Cr Beharrell seconded" That the Public Works Committee be requested to draw up a regulation from the report of the Tramways Committee," Carried.
