WEEKLY REVIEW OF THE AUSTRALIAN CORN MARKET.

The Auttralat'uin of May 4th reports : — In the produce market a fair amount of business has beeu carried through, but transactions are restricted by the paucity of supplies. In breadstuffs a marked improvement has taken place, and the market is

still characterised by a decidedly upward tendency. For flour a very brisk inquiry has been experienced, and, contrary to the sort of business which has been done of late, the sales reported have been somewhat extensive. On one occasion three lin'js. one of '200 tons, another of 110 tons, aud yet another of 50 tons, were disposed of; £15 uct was paid for the bulk, if not all. Early in the week £15 was offered freely for flour in auyqnautity without being accepted, and £15 ss"was obtained for a line of 50 tons. Trade parcels were also got rid of to a considerable extent, in 10 to 15 ton lots at £15 10s. On Saturday there was a good demand, aud buyers were offering £15 5s for parcels, without drawing out sellers. Trade parcels were moved off at £15 10s to £15 15s. and holders had little hesitation in asking £16. On Monday a pood trade demand was experienced at £15 10s to £15 15s aud £16 for the supply of actual requirements. For a line of 100 tons £15 10s was offered without leading to business: such parcels are scarce, aLd difficult to get hold of. On Tucsdav flour

was much wanted, and very saleable at £15 10s to £15 12s 6d iv parcels. The latter price was paid for a good line. Sales were also made at £15 10s, but not to an extent to satisfy buyers. At auction, £15 5s was accepted for 20 tons. Bakers' lots were taken up at £16. The week closes with a good inquiry, and the market is very strong indeed at £15 10s to £15 12s 6d for parcels, and £15 15s to £16 for trade lots. Wheat, like wise, is very active ; but the supply is very short, and transactions, in consequence, are restricted. On Thursday 6s 9d was paid at auction for rather a dirty sample. On Friday 1000 bags Western district were cleared off at a similar figure. On Monday 5000 bushels were placed in parcels at 6s 6d to 6s lOd for ordinary to fair samples ; a few small lots of really prime realised 7s. The market continues very firm, and 7s is offered freely in all directions for prime samples. Ordinary samples can be bought at 6s 6d to 6s 9d. In feeding grains we have little to refer to. Oats have been quitted at very irregular prices. On Thursday 900 bags Tasmanian coast oats, ex Don, were sold on the wharf at 2s 7s to 2s 9d ; afterwards 2s 9d to 33 l£d was realised at another auction sale in the city. On Friday ordinary stout New Zealand were sold at 3s Id to 3s LJd. On Saturday 1000 bags fair quality were quitted at 2s lid. Quotations range from 2s 9d to 3s for feeding, and up to 3s 3d for finer descriptions. Maize is without animation. New is moved off at 3s 3d to 3s 4d, about 2000 bushels having been disposed of at this quotation. Old is saleable at 3s 6d. Cape and Oregon feeding barley were quitted at the extreme rate of 4s, while inferior malting realised 5s to 5s 4d. Bran is quoted at Is Id. Pollard is worth Is 2d to is 6d. Victorian oatmeal brings £20 to £21.
