ROAD BOARDS.

ELLESMERE.

A meeting was held at Leeston, May Ist 1872. Present—E. J. Lee (chairman), J Ronnie, and Amos Sherrat. The Chairman informed the meeting that agreeably to their wish he had on the 12th ult duly accepted and sigued the rate-list for a general rate of 6d in the £, aud had advertised it as payable this day. Tenders for various works were also accepted by him. Notice has been given by the Board of Conservators for the North Rakaia District, that they will strike a rate of 6d in the £, on that portion of the district declared to be liable. Instructions were given to the overseer to prepare at once a list, and to take the necessary steps to collect it at the same time as the general rate now due. A minute was passed authorising the chairman to appl-y for the 25 per cent, of the provincial grant, now payable. With reference to the work on road between Fincham's and Lake road, applied for by Mr A. E. Williams and others, the overseer was authorised to proceed with it by tender at once, on satisfactorily arranging as to the contribution to be payed of half the cost. The overseer's report for the past month was considered. Mr Moor and others appeared as to the state of the main drain by Lambie's. The overseer was directed to see the parties below the drain, and arrange, if possible, to turn the water so as to enable the work to proceed. Should he not succeed in this the Board recommended the parties to drag'out the impediments as well as they can, and undertake that, when dry weather sets in again, they will clean out the drain to original depth, on the parties contributing half the cost. The pay-sheet for April, of £35 6s 4d, was examined and passed for payment. Attention haviug been called to the unfinished state of the new bridge over the Selwyn, the chairman was requested to write to the Government and call attention to the great delay that has taken place in the completion of this work, and the consequent great inconvenience it has caused in the district.
