GORSE HEDGES.

TO TIIE EDITOR OF THE MESS. Sir, —While Christchurch can deservedly ay claim to tbe best arrangements in New Zealand in the way of good and a well organised force for the extinguishing of fires. I think much more might be done than has yet been accomplished for their prevention. I allude to the numerous gorse fences throughout the city. Tbe many alarms of fire from this cause show that the idea of danger is not a fanciful one. Among others, let mc direct your attention to one in Madras street, behind Messrs Dal-o-ety and Co.'s store. It is within a few feet dist nee from a large building in which it is said there are several thousand gallons of kerosene stored. This belief (whether well founded or not I cannot say), causes a considerable amount of alarm in the neighborhood. A very large amount of property is at the meicy of any careless smoker throwing a lighted match away. Ido think the time is come when all gorse fences within the city boundaries should be done away with. To remove them, would, no doubt be an inconvenience and expense to several individuals, but this must give way to the public safety. There are many somewhat similar cases, and the sooner prompt and decisive steps are taken by the City Council the better. I remain, ke, A Citizen of Christchurch.
