THE TIDES.
The schooner Canterbury cleared the customs yesterday for Picton. The s.s. Rangitoto sailed for Dnnedin yesterday at 1.30 p.m. We are pleased to learn that the report respecting the supposed loss of the schooner Rose of Eden ishot correct, as she arrived safely some time ago at Wanganui. The s.B. Maori, Captain Malcolm, arrived in harbor yesterday at 9.20 a.tn., from Dunedin and intermediate ports. She left Port Chalmers on Thursday, at 9 p.m. ; arrived at Timaru' next morning,, discharged cargo and took in wool, and sailed at 3 p.m. on Saturday:; arrived at Ak&roa at 1 a.n_. yesterday, sailed again at 4 ajn., arriving as above. We fear that all hopes of the safety of the schooner Rifleman must be given up, and that this .vessel was lost, in the gale which occnrredUpn the 11th nit. The Rifleman sailed from Lyttelton on the 10th, bound for Havelock" She was seen by the s.s. Wellington outside the Heads, and when off the Kaikouras, and during, the gale, she passed tbe S.S.. Ahuriri, running before it. The gale lasted ~sll~ Saturday -night and Sunday. Captain Kennedy stated that it was the heaviest ga\e he had experienced for many years; S3. Maori, bound to Wellington at, the same time, had also to run for * shelter. It was thought by mabyuthat the master (Capt S. Toomey , late of the Lady Don, schooner), had got into some bay, and had stopped to repair any damages. Captain Gibson, port officer, teleto, Wellington and asked that the p-s. Luna might be sent to search the coast. The steamer arrived on Friday evening, and after searching the coast thoroughly could see no trace. The schooner was well ballasted ; in addition to the ballast she had on her trip down from Auckland she took on board an extra quantity of stone ballast. We are sony to say that several of ihe men were! married and leave wives and children to. mourn then: loss. She was towed out by the steamer Lioness ; 4th was off Cape Fou!wind, S.W. winds; sth, passed Farewell Spit, 8 a.m., saw schooner Mavis; 6th, 8 p.m., pa-sod tbe - Brothers Islands, strong westerly winds ; 7th, 4 a.m., round Cape Campbell ; 6 p.m. was off Kaikouras. Experienced heavy squall from S.W.. lasting four hours: Stli, (5 a.m., had light easterly winds. She brings a carpi ■•' timber. The barquo Indus sailed >r Newcastle on Saturday morning. | Tlie schooner Canterbury got up anchor ! jon Saturday morning, the wind being very li-ht at the time ;in attempting to beat out she missal stays and drifted ashore on to thc rocks between Peacock's and the Railway wharves. There was neither wiud or heavy sea during the morning or she would have received severe injuries. Fortunately she was got off about noon without receiving any damage, and sailed for Pieton the same evening. The schooner E. U. Cameron got under weigh yesterday morning, but finding there was no wind she returned for a cargo. She will sail to-day. The cutter Thames sailed for Wellington yesterday. [by telegraph.]
