A new industry is, being commenced in Fiji, namely the growth of sugar. Several gentlemen have for some time past been visiting different districts of Fiji, for the purpose of ascertaining the most promising place for the growth of cane. Not satisfied with other parts of the group, which they had visited, judging that some were too subject to rains, and in some cases flooding, whilst in others they at times suffered from the want of moisture, our hunters at last found the happy medium in Sava Sava. In that district accordingly they have purchased land, and commenced active operations, and, at the same time, have ordered crushing machinery, which is now on its way down.
A great number of laborers have arrived in port during the week. There has only been one foreign arrival of labor crafts which brought thirty-three men': all the rest bting Fijian labor, principally from the Kewa. Two vessels from that river arrived bringr ing 200 men, atjd pth,er arrivals from ita Coast have likewise brought a large number. Messrs Cripps and Moeller are the agents ios the Fijian labor, and are in regular receipt of such laborers, being agents for it.
Some of the refugees. frp,in, Tanna, an accouut of the recent outrages on that islaud. are in a position of great distress, and unable to leave for their homes. It is therefore in contemplation to open a subscription for the purpose of removing them from their present place of abode to the colonies.
