CORRESPONDENCE.
A NUISANCE. TO THE EDITOR OB THE PBE3S.
SIB,—On a former occasion I called attention, in the columns of your paper, to a nuisance very rampant in Christchurch. and so far from being unabated, it is rather more intolerable than before. I allude to the larrikin nuisance. A little vigilance on the part of the police would, I think, be instrumental in checking the evil. If any enterprising policeman, of an exploring turn of mind, would take a stroll up Madras street, in the direction of the Railway station, any evening between the hours of seven and nine, he would have an excellent opportunity of exhibiting his vigilance, activity and intelligence—l believe these, are the specialities of the model constable. The latest development of the Christcburch arabs is the demolishing of fences and rails, and then the larceny of the same, they having discovered that it is a cheap and simple method of procuring firewood. The fine gum trees that border one side of Madras street, afford a magnificent cheap gymnasium for restless and athletic juveniles of the locality, who nightly swarm into their branches, and when "tired of yelling and whooping, and annoying -the quiet residents around, finish up by tearing from the trunks all the boughs that will yield to their efforts*, and beariug them off in triumph. I have heard that fl policeman is supposed to be on constant duty at the Railway station. It may be so ; but if it is the case, he never by any chance troubles the other end of the street with his presence. Might I suggest that he varies the monotony of his duties by a little gentle exercise in the direction T have pointed out, and I think the effect will be salutary in checking the nuisance I complain of. Yours, &c, Pedestrian.
