I TENDERS are invited by the Colonial Government for the CONSTRUCTION of about TEN MILES of the OTAGO SOUTHERN TRUNK RAILWAY, being the Clutha Contract, and extending northwards from the River Clutha. By command, JOHN BLACKETT, Acting Engineer-in-Chief. Public Works Office, Wellington, 19th May, 1871. 2723 TO CONTRACTORS. THE Telegraph Commissioner is prepared to RECEIVE TENDERS for the ! SUPPLY and DELIVERY of ONE THOUSAND (1000) TELEGRAPH POLES, more Jor less, for a line of Telegraph between the City of Christchurch and the Town of Akaroa. The poles to be sawn from the heart of totara. The poles to be of the following dimensions : : —Twenty-five (25) and twenty (20) feet long (in proportions hereinafter to be determined, but the greater proportion will be twenty (20) feet long), to be eight (8) inches square at the butt, and six (6) inches square at the top. ! The poles to be sound, straight, and free from shakes, knots, and sap. N.B.— No pole \ will be accepted which contains the least sap j or speckled timber. The poles will have to be delivered at points not less than four (4) chains apart, i along a line of telegraph to be hereafter i more particularly indicated by pegs, which will follow, as a rule, along the Lincoln road, Lake Ellesmere, Little River road, Lake Forsyth, up a bare spur and through a pass both to the eastward of Wainui Pass : thence by a spur down to Barry's Bay, and from thence round by the road skirting the harbor Of Akaroa to the town of Akaroa. The delivery of the poles to commence on the Ist September, 1871, and the whole to be delivered within four (4) months of the date of signing the contract, nnder a penalty of five pounds (£5) per diem for every day beyond the time specified, which penalty will be recoverable from the contractor from any sums that may be, or become, due to him under his contract. Progress payments will made at the rate of eighty (80) per cent, as the works advance, the balance on completion of contract. The contractor will not be allowed to let or sub-let bis contract without the consent in writing of the Telegraph Commissioner, or of the person authorised by him to act on hia behalf. Tenderers are to specify the price per pole as per sizes given. Each tender to he accompanied by a deposit of twenty-five pounds (£25) as a guarantee of good faith, which sum will be forfeited by any tenderer, should he refuse to take up his tender in the event of its being accepted. Each tender must include the names of two sureties for approval, who are willing to become bond for the due performance of the contract, in the event of the tender being accepted, and must be accompanied by a notification to that effect, signed by the two proposed sureties. Tenders endorsed, " Tender for the supply of one thonsand (1000) Poles, more or less, for telegraph line between Christchurch and Akaroa," and addressed "The General Manager, Telegraph Department, Wellington," must be sent in not later than the Ist July next.
