Tuesday, May 2. [Before Wm. Donald, Esq., R.M., Captain Gibson, H. R. Webb, Esq., and H. Allwright, Esq., J.P's.] Civil Case.—O'Brien v. Kerr, jun.— Claim, 12s, for damage to windows ; plaintiff nonsuited. Police Case.—A Swede was brought up charged with attempting to use a knife in a quarrel at Leslie's hotel. Constable M'Guire proved arresting the prisoner (who had his face severely damaged), on information received as to his attempting to use a knife. Thomas Leslie stated that the prisoner was quarrelling at his hotel late one night with a man named Duke. The cook called out that he had a knife in his hand. He ran out of the house, but came back again. Witness turned him out. He was afterwards locked up by the police. G. Walsh, cook, said that during the row at Leslie's he saw prisoner take a knife in his hand. It was not opened. He knocked it out of his hand, and picked it up and gave it to Mr Leslie. The prisoner has been living some time in the house. He was a quarrelsome man. The prisoner denied using a knife, and said the one produced was not his. He had been assaulted in the house. The Bench cautioned the prisoner, and dismissed the case. Breach of Gorse Fence Bye-laws.— Samuel Pearson was charged by the Inspector under the Act, with a breach of the bye-laws in not removing gorse growing on his laud, after receiving proper notice. Defendant said that he had been too ill to attend to it, and stated that he had only a few isolated gorse bushes growing, far removed from any house. Case dismissed on payment of costs, 4s. Cattle Trespass. — Geo. Scott was charged with being the.owner of eleven head of cattle wandering at large in Ripon street. Fined 11s and costs, 6s.
