CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL.

The Council met last evening at 7 p.m. Present—llia Worship the Mayor, Crs Pratt, Bishop, Jameson, Hart, Goss, Anderson, Calvert, and Sawtell. The Town Clkkk reported the receipts during the week us follows : —City rates, 1860, £2 li)a; do. IS7O, £101 2s ; scavenging, £41 7s 3d ; Provincial Government on account of steam fire engine, £25 ; subscriptions to new steam fire engine, £47 2s ; petroleum licenses, £15 ; fines from Resident Magistrate's Court for July, £1 15s ; rent for weigh bridge, £5 8s 4d ; building fees, £2 ; rent from market-place, 7s: total, £245 Oβ 7d. Overdraft at the Bank, £34S 0* sd.

Accounts to the amount of £151 10s 10d were passed and ordered to be paid. The City Subveyob reported that tenders would be laid before the Council for lighting the kerosene lamps in the city for twelve months, from 12th August, IS7O. The number of lamps at present lighted was fifteen—viz., Madrns bridge, juuction of Barbadoes street and Ferry road, Montreal street and Worcester street, St Luke's Church, Cathedral square and Worcester street, Manchester street and Armagh street, Salisbury 6treet and Madras street, Craniner square, Cambridge terrace and Manchester street, Durham street and St Asaph street Wire bridge (Antigua street), Tuam street and Durham street, Cashel street, and Barbadoes street, Ferry road and East Town belt, Colombo street and Salisbury street. That the labor gang had been employed in various work in the city during the week. The following tenders for lighting with kerosene were received and considered : — John Pullen, 6£d per lamp per night; Henry Sharpell, 7d ; George McCulloch, 7|d. On the motion of Cγ Jameson, seconded by Cr Goss, Mr John Pullen'e tender was accepted. A letter was read from the Board of Conservators, including a precept for levying a genera Land special rate, viz, £360 19s 7d for general rate, and a like cum of £360 J9a 7d for a special rate ; the same to be paid within fifty days. The letter stated that the Board were willing to pay any reasonable sum for the collection of such rates, but would not furnish a copy of the rate roll unless required to do so by the City Council. It"was resolved that the matter be referred to the Finance Committee to report upon next Monday night. Letter from Thomas Roach, asking to be excused hie rates on account of poverty. Referred to the Rate Collector for information.

Letter from the Ferry Road Drain Committee, requesting the Council to pay a quota of the expense (about £25) of a case to bo submitted to the Attorney-General, for his opinion respecting the Ferry road drain. After diecuseion, it was resolved " That the Council regrets that it cannot agree to the request made by Mr F. Pavitt on behalf of the Ferry Koad Drain Committee." The seal of the Council was affixed to the contract with the Gas Company for lighting the city for three years, from 6th August, 1870. A report was read from the Fire Brigade Committee, recommending) that the sum of £10 be granted to the Fire Police for uniform caps, 4c. The report was received and adopted. A report was read from the City Inspector, respecting an accumulation of stagnant water in Cathedral square, on property of which Mr G Packe was the agent. Referred to the Sanitary Committee, with power to act. A carriage license was transferred from Shailer to Dodd.

The following petroleum licenses were granted :—Twentyman and Cousin ; James Shoolbraid; Morrison, Sclanders, Fletcher and Co ; Kobert Sutherland ; M M Wyat t; C W Turner; W J Fisher; Morrow, Bassett and Co ; Hawkee and Strouts; E Recce; John King ; G P Day ; W A Knapman; Ward and Reeves.

A carriers' license "was granted to Thomas Lee, and a hackney carriage license to Thomae Goodyear. The Council then adjourned.
