THE SUPERINTENDENCY. to the editor of tiie press. Sir, —An effort has been made to disparage Mr Rolleston for denying that the office of Superintendent was going a hogging when he accepted it. Whilst I appreciate the good taste of His Honor in trying to conceal a fact which would havo been, if admitted, very humiliating to his audience, yet, nevertheless, it is a well-known fact that Mr Moorhouse resigned because the salary, aa reduced by him, wa_ insufficient to maintain the " honor and dignity " of the office ; and also that Mr Bowen declined it for the same reason. Does it not then, rather than prejudice Mr Rolleston, reflect honor on him that, when tho office was impoverished and shunned, he was found disinterested onough, and with faith enough in the resources of the province if in the hands of honest and capable men, to accept the office in its humiliation ? And would it not he not only a very ra»h but also a very ungrateful act to deprive Mr Rolleston of the opportunity of raising the province to its rightful position—first among the provinces of the colony —to say nothing of risking it in the hands of a reckless, careless man, whose extravagant injudicious conduct has made him notorious throughout these lands, and who, by means of monstrous proraises, previously succeeded in deluding unthinking men into the expectation of things that it was not in the power even of the gods to bestow. But I write not because I fear Mr Rolleston will be unsuccessful, for his conduct ha? placed him too high in the estimation of the people for such an issue, but because I feel that his opponent should receive such a discomfiture as should intimate to him that the electors of Canterbury have a moral sense as well as common sense. Your obedient servant, T. Jokes. Waltham, 23th April, 1870.
