CHESS.
A meeting of the committee appointed io arrange the proposed chess tournament for the championship of the province was held last Friday evening, at the Literary Institute; Mr W. D. Wood, President of the Canterbury Chess Club, in the chair. The names of Mr Veel and Captain Simmons having been placed on the committee, the following resolutions were adopted : — 1. That the tournament be played at the Literary Institute, Christchurch. 2. That all persons wishing to join in the tournament shall send in their names to the Secretary on or before Friday, April 1, after which date no entries will bo received. 3. That the same he advertised. 4. That the subscription be half a guinea. 5. That every player shall play two games with each of the other membe-si 6. That drawn games be counted as half a game. 7. That the winner of the greatest number of games be declared the champion. 8. That in case of any ties occurring in the number of games, the same shall be played off and decided in five games. 9. That the players meet every Friday evening at seven p.m. 10. That the position of such games as shall not be concluded at eleven p.m. be taken down by the Secretary, and signed by each of the two players, and the game be continued on the following play night. 11. That any player failing to attend within one hour of the time appointed for meeting shall forfeit 2a 6d to the fund for each and every non-attendance, and after three such forfeitures will not be permitted to enter the lists again. 12. That should any member, at the time of disqualification, have left a game unfinished, the same shall score as a draw to his opponent. ' 13. That a first and second prize shall be given. 14. That any question not embraced in j these resolutions be referred to the managing committee, whose decision must be considered final. 15. Every player entering the lists on tbe tournament must consider himself, ipso facto, bound by all regulations issued by the managing committee.
