The Deva, brig, and Bravo, brigantine* arrived in harbour yesterday afternoon from Newcastle, but owing to the strong S W gale blowing, they were obliged to bring up opposite Camp Bay. They are both laden with coal. The barques John Knox and Collingwood hauled off the wharf into the stream yesterday forenoon, and the Crishna and Southern Cross took the berths vacated by the former. Yesterday at about 3pm Lyttelton harbor experienced the heaviest gale of wind that has visited the port for years. It came on all at ouce from the south-west, and the whole surface of the water was a sheet of foam. While the Bquall was at its highest, one of the ' watermen, named John Walsh, in coming from a vessel lying out in the stream, very unwisely hoisted his sail, and the boat was immediately capsized. He managed to get on bottom of the boat, and fortunately the accident having been seen from the shore, a boat was quickly manned by volunteers, who picked him up and towed his boat in shore. Walsh received no greater injury than a good wetting. A boat from one of the barques also put off to his assistance. The ketch Minnie put off from the wharf under sail immediately previous to the squall coming on, and not having made sufficient effing was forced to let go her anchor, but she. drifted in close to the wharf and was in a very precarious situation, being deeply laden. However, plenty of willing hands gave assistance, discharged her deck load and secured her before any harm was done. The following is a summary of the Celaeno's cargo:—»
