LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Monday, A.pril 26. Present—The Mayor, and all the Councillors, with the exception of Cr Hargreaves. The minute, of last meeting were read and confirmed.
Amounts received during the week—Rates,
£6 13a; rent, £27 10s * total, £34 3s. The outward correspondence was read, and the inward was laid upon the table. A letter from the Inspector of Nuisances, calling attention to the nuisance arising from the grain being landed upon the wharf from the wreck of the Golden Isle, and asking for instructions.
The Mayob said the Council ought to take some steps to obtain power over the outskirts of the town, by passing bye-laws so as to enablo them to deal with matters of this sort.
In answer to a question from the Mayor, Cr Ward, one of the members of the Reserves Committe, said they had no report to bring forward, as their chairman had not attended or called a meeting, and therefore nothing had been done. The Mayob thought it would be better to appoint another member of committee, or arrange matters so that two would form a quorum. Cr England proposed, and Cr Wolbdgh seconded, " That two members of the committee form a quorum." Cr Hawkins, one of the committee, would prefer to . have another member appointed, and proposed that Cr Woiedge be added to the committee. Cr Chalmebs seconded the motion, and it was carried. The Works Committee report was read. It stated that the footpath under Mr Smart's care wants repairs; that the Brenchley farm road is being proceeded with, and that £20 has already been expended upon it. The report was received. ! The report of the Fire Brigade Committee was read. It made suggestions as to the best means of organizing a Fire Brigade on a permanent footing; A discussion ensued as to the means 'at the Council's command to pay the expenses of the Brigade. It was moved and seconded that the report be received. Carried.
Tbe following amounts were ordered to be paid :—Weekly Pay Sheet, £5 4s • Clerk's salary, £1613s 4d. The consideration of the Bye-laws was gone into by the Council, and the following were passed : Part 1 of Schedule xiii; part 2 of Schedule xiii; and clause 1 and 2of part 4. Cr AtLWRiGHT moved, and Cr England seconded—" That as no explicit answer from the Provincial Government can be obtained as to their tenure of or intentions respecting the reclaimed land, the four members representing the town of Lyttelton in the Provincial Council be invited to meet this Council, in order that the whole case may be brought before the Provincial Council at the ensuing session." Carried with two dissentient?. The Clerk was instructed to invite the members to meet the Council on the 3rd May at the Council Chambers. Cr Ballistiee called the attention of the Council to the fact of the roadway of Norwich Quay not being continued to meet the road to the Breakwater, as promised by Mr Dobson. The Clerk was instructed to call a special meeting of the Council for half-past 12, on Monday, the 3rd May. The Council then adjourned.
