V CGCv Albion. The return match between fhe UCCC and Albion Clubs was played on the Httgley Park ground yesterday. The weather waa everything that could be desired. The match commenced shortly before eleven o'clock, the UCCC winning the toss, and electing to take first innings. Messrs Harley and Cotterill went in first, and 18 runs were made before Ilarley retired, bowled by Turner, after making a lively innings of ten. The next two wickets (Moore's and Dickinson's) fell very quickly, only 2 runs being added to the score. Fowler was the next man, and began to score rapidly. Cotterill, however, was shortly afterwards caught at longstop—4 for 34. Stevens then joined Fowler, and a very long stand was made, Fowler at first playing rather unsteadily, and giving two or three chances, which were not taken advantage of. However, after he got well in, his hitting was splendid to all parts of the field. Stevens played a good steady innings, his 24 comprising one 4, five 2'e, and singles without a chance. When he was caught the score stood at 110, and 5 wickets down. Mainwaring was soon disposed of—6 forllO. Parkereon and Fowler then gave the field some trouble, the 9 runs of the former being well and quickly obtained. An adjournment was then made to lunoh, which was provided by Mr Buddenklau. After lunch was over, Mr Fowler, in the name of a I number of gentlemen conneoted with cricket in the province, presented a bat to Mr A. J. Cotterill in recognition of his services in the late interprovincial match with Otago. The game was resumed at about a quarter j to two, Messrs Fowler and Ward going to the wickets. Fowler, however, was bowled in the first over, having played a fine hitting innings of 67, which comprised six 4's, six 3's, six 2's, &c. Eight for 125. Beade, after making a fine off drive for 3 and a single was caught at cover, and the laat man, Fenwick, came in. Fen wick, who is a College boy, has a very good style of play, and if he sticks to the game will undoubtedly make a good player. He made a very pretty (not out) innings of ten, including two excellent bite for 3 each. The innings closed for 141. After a short delay the Albions sent Wood and Maples to the wickets. Both men were playing well and steadily when Wood unfortunately got struck in the face and fell over on to hie wicket—l for 12. Turner followed and made a good drive for 3, but shortly afterwards got run out in attempting a close run—2 for 26. Calvert, who came next, began with Maples to score rapidly, and the slows were tried for two overs but without effect, Calvert playing them in a somewhat unscientific but successful manner. Dickinson was put on again, and his first ball proved fatal to Calvert—3 for 60. Bent put together 10, in which was a good leg hit for 3. He was bowled by a splendid ball from Harley, who also got Souter's wicket next ball—4 and 5 for 66. Maples, who had been playing a very steady innings, was now joined by Hobbs and a considerable stand was made, the bowling being changed once or twice, the slows eventually proving fatal to Hobbs — 6 for 85. The acore still kept increasing rapidly, the runs being chiefly made by Maples. Moore however broke the spell by taking Pierc« and Dawe's wickets in one over —7 and 8 for 105. Card played fairly for his 7 and was splendidly caught by Harley. Lovell added nothing to the score, and the innings concluded for 119, Maples carrying his bat for 51. His innings was a very good one, not characterised by very brilliant hitting, but by steady play throughout, and he had no lives until nearly the end of it. He made 1 four, 5 threes, 9 twos, and singles. The fielding on both sides was very indifferent, a very large number of catches being missed. It being a one day's match, the UOCO won on the Ist innings by 22 runs. The following is the score:— 17000.
