RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Chbistchubch—March 16.

[Before T. W. Maude, Esq., J.P., and J. E. Graham, Esq., J.P.] cmii cases. . The following civil cases were heard and disposed of:— Wilson t Greening—£3 16s Id. Judgment for full amount and costs. Marks v Aitken—Claim of £3 for wages. Defendant tendered into Court £2, and judgment was given for that amount; plaintiff to pay costs. Sycamore v Graham—£l2 14s, for goods, &c. Judgment for plaintiff, with costß. Wellborn v Holland—9s Bd. Judgment for Bs, costs divided. Cook and Boss v Smart— £s 19a 6d, for promissory note. Judgment for full amount and costs. Montgomery v Hamilton—ln this case a judgment summons, under the Resident Magistrates' Act, 1868, was issued, for the defendant to show cause why he should not pay the amount of a distress warrant which had been issued against him and returned no effects. Defendant was ordered to pay £1 per week until the whole amount is paid, and in default to be imprisoned for three months. About twenty other cases were set down for hearing, but were settled out of Court. There were no criminal cases heard.

CIVIL CASES.

Connell and Murie v Payne and Wilson— £45 4s, for work done to vessel in repairs. Mr Cotterill for plaintiff, Mr Nalder for defendant. Plaintiff was nonsuited with costs 635, and professional fee £2 2s. A large number of witnesses were examined in this case. Oliver v Scott—Claim £4 lis sd. Judgment for plaintiff and costs. Collier and Co v O'Connor—Claim £7 2s 9d. Defendant appeared in a drunken state and was taken in charge by the police.

Kaiapoi—March 16.

[Before G. L. Mellruh, Esq., R.M. } and C. Dudley, Esq., J.P.] POLICE cases. R. Harper was fined 10s and coßts for allowing two head of cattle to stray in the town. W. A. Crooke was charged J with destroying a footpath. Case dismissed. Walter Terry, of Oxford, was charged with assaulting with intent a child named Annie Marsh, of tender years. Mr Joynt appeared for the prisoner, and reserved his defence, the prisoner being convicted to take his trial at the next criminal session of the Supreme Court. CITIL. Pearce v Lynskey—This was an interpleader claim on the proceeds of a sale of wire sold under distress warrant in the case of Day v Smith. Plaintiff claimed a part of the wire as his, but being unable to prove identity was nonsuited. Day v Pearson—Claim £6 16s. Defendant ordered to pay amount by instalments of 15s per week, or suffer two months' imprisonment. White and Co v W. Robinson, Eyreton— Claim £15 2s 3d. Judgment for plaintiff for amount claimed. M. Harris v Pointz—Claim £20. Judgment for plaintiff. Funston v Clark—Claim £11 7s lOd. Defendant ordered to pay amount in instalments of 15s per week, or in default to undergo two months' imprisonment.

Birch and Co v Lilly—Claim £7 9s lid. This defendant was brought up, in custody charged with contempt in disobeying a summons; that case, however, was dismissed, and he was ordered to pay off the [debt by instalments of £3 per month.
