[FBOM OVa COBBESPONDENT.] Hokitika, March 10, 4.40 p.m. The Alhambra has arrived, and brings down our Melbourne dates to the 4th March. She has on board 53 passengers and 90 tons cargo, and sails again to-night or to-morrow morning. The news generally is unimportant. The Puke of Edinburgh was being received as a private gentleman. He was at a ball on the 25th ult.; went to Barwon Part on the 26th, and is now shooting, &c. The Prince attended Greelong races, and was to lay the foundation stone of the Prince Alfred Hospital. No special public demonstrations have been made. He is appointed to leave for Sydney on the 6th inst. The cricket match between the aboriginals and the men of the Galatea resulted in a drawn game. Commander Norman, late of the Victoria, has been appointed to bring out the monitor Cerberus. Hugo Levinger, supercargo of the Young Australia, on which three islanders were murdered, has been charged with the crime. The details alleged, if proved, show the most cold--1 blooded atrocity.

A case of small pox .was admitted into the Melbourne Hospital on 27th February. The patient was subsequently conveyed to the dep6t at Boyal Park. Every precaution was taken afterwards. The Spring Creek diggings are turning out well. There is great competition between the rival lines of steamers running between Melbourne and Launceston, and fares are now 10s, cabin; 5s second cabin. Freight 2s 6d per ton. An extraordinary storm passed over Melbourne on the 3rd inst, doing great damage, both on shore and to the shipping. Queensborough is again threatened with small pox. A fresh case is reported there on the 3rd inßt. A nugget, weighing 201b5., was j found at Inglewood on the 2nd. j Sydney, Feb. 26. Captain Howell's trial for murdering the South Sea Islanders has been postponed until May. The Eev.Mr Fillingham, of Grafton, is dead. Feb. 27. The Legislative Assembly, by a large majority, has affirmed the desirability of repealing the postage rate on news- j papers. ' Bail was refused to Captain Howell. March 1. The Steam Navigation Board recommend the prosecution of the captains of the steamers Fire King and Herald. March 2. Mr Lethby, formerly of the Customs department at Melbourne, was drowned, whilst bathing, at Newcastle. Brisbane, March 3. Baverman has been found guilty of a murderous assault on Mr Manning, the under secretary, and sentenced to penal servitude for life. Adelaide. News unimportant.
