KAIAPOI.

f JChe import of coal is very noticeable, being twice as touch in amount last as the previous -jear. It is consumed in fuel for cocro, flax, and threshing machines, and the coming ecarcifey of firewood is beginning to make it valuable for household purposes. The import of timber has been about equal to last year, •and affords evidence cf the steady increase of population and the necessity for additional house accommodation. Statistics are unmanageable by some people, Mid are in consequence avoided. Yet it is Peasant to notice the increase in the quantity of grain exported, the quantity of potatoes

produced, butler and cheeee manufactured/as j well as hams and bacon cured, over the totals for last year. Of wheat, a third more than the quantity ia 1867 was shipped last year; of oats twice, and barley fWa times as much. The wool season began later, and the quantity shipped in 18G7 is therefore larger than in 1868. Besides these returns I cannot be far wrong in stating that a quantity equal to at least onefifth of that exported is consumed within the localities where it is raised; and in all the ' items named a great deal that is produced is removed by land carriage to Christenurch, and of this no returns are procurable. In this year's returns it is hoped flax will be a prominent item; and in the other exports I hope- to see a proportionate increase, at least equal to that of last year over the previous year. In conclusion, I may remark that it has been ascertained from reliable sources that there ia only a slight falling off on the returns published by the General Q-overnment Enumerator of the grain crops in oats and barley through the drought, but that the late rains may do sufficient damage to make the estimated yield published in a foot note to his returns not far from the true average yield.
