LIGHT BREAD.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE PBESS. Sib,—-It is a pity that many more do not follow the example of your correspondent " Pateifamilias," in weighing the loaves furnished t) them by their bakere, and publishing the result; so general an exposure might work a reform. My own experience (of many years) coincides -with the facts stated in the letter which appeared in your paper of this morning. The so-called 4 lb. loaf I hare scarcely ever found to exceed 3HbB., or the 2-lb. more than If-lbs. When I have expostulated, the answer lias been—"We never weigh our loaves; some may be more, some lees." Through all the years of my housekeeping, however, in thb country I have never been so fortunate as to have one of over-weight, nor even of full weight, dealt out to mc. Might sot the police or some special officer be empowered to inspect the loaves in the bakere' *|ops and carts j and if after weighing two or three they were found to be light, seize the *hole stock ? Borne such law, if fully carried out and persevered in, would make short work of these fraads. I am, sir, yours, &c, One op the Defbatjded. Christchurcb, February 19.
