[By Southern Telegraph.] Timaeu, August 12, 4.45 p.m. A public meeting will be held tonight to petition the Assembly' for separation from Canterbury, in consequence of the rejection of the Local Government Bill. There is great excitement in town. [By West Coast Telegraph.] Hokitika, August,l2, 1.40 p.m. The steamers Otago and Gothenburg have arrived from Melbourne,' the former bringing 250 passengers, of whom 1 100 are Chinese,'-for Otago. The adjourned separation meeting will he held to-night. i The Christehurch mail was brought in yesterday morning by pack-horse. The mail left for Christehurch on Saturday afternoon. The bar is in bad condition. The tug Challenge went ashore this morning, and is very awkwardly situated.. The Yarra was not able to get out to tender the Gothenburg. The late gale has committed great havoc on the Nelson goldfields, one town (Waite's) having been blown, away. . The Claud Hamilton sailed for Sydney yesterday, carrying away 29,000 ounces of gold.and fifty passengers. : There is great excitement here about the goldfields in the North Island.
