PROGRESS OF AGRICULTURE IN CALIFORNIA.
The San Francisco " Bulletin " says, that according to latest advices, a greater breadth of land will be put under cultivation in the State this year than ever before. Some interesting experiments will be tried with new crops, and new varieties of seeds, the results of which will be of great importance. A large amount of real eutate has changed hande in the city since the commencement of the new year. The transactions at the Landoffice have also been very large. There is a movement of population towards the grazing regions of the coast countries, and some large tracts of land have been taken up. Parties have recently bought 17,000 acres in Santa Barbara county, near the coast, and not far from San Buenaventura. It is the intention to subdivide the land in email parcels, and dispose of it to actual settlers. About fifteen families have already signified their intention of settling on the same. These will form the nucleus of a new town, to be called Saticay. The lands are well watered by the Santa Clara river, and are within the zone, where the orange and lemon grow to perfection. These lands are sold to actual settlers of a desirable character, at from six dollars to ten dollars per acre according to location and quality. The landing will be at or near the mouth of the Santa Clara river. It is intended to secure for the new town the advantages of churches and schools as soon as the number of settlers shall warrant. Other large tracts of land south of Monterey, and near to the coast, have changed hands within a certain period. These are sought in part for dairy purposes, the lands in that region being found quite deeirable for this uee. The dull season, which has been caused by the embargo which an unusually stormy winter has put upon all kinds of out-of-door business, is likely to be followed by a season of great activity, especially in all agricultural pursuits.
