Miscellaneous. BOARD OF EDUCATION. PUBLIC SCHOLARSHIPS. THE BOARD OF EDUCATION hereby give notice that in the month of June next, on days to be specified in a future advertisement, Public Examinations will bo hold ■by Examiners appointed by the Board, of Candidates desirous of competing for the above Scholarships, under the following regulations: — The Scholarships to be six in number, of the Talue of £40 each for one year, unless further appropriations aro made by tho Provincial Council. Two of these Scholarships will be open to all boys below twelve years of age attending school in the province, whether public or private. The remaining four will be open only to boys below eleven years of age attending district schools, aided by the Board. The proceeds of the Scholarships will be available only as a contribution towards the expenses of tuition, board, lodging, and other school expenses, at some school, to be approved of by the Board. In cases where the successful candidates desire it, the Board will provide, in lieu of the above sum of £40, board, lodging, tuition, and washing, free of cost for ono year, from the date of the examination, at some school to be fixed by the Board. Those desiring to compete must report themselves as candidates in writing to the Chairman of the Board, on or before the 30th of April next, stating their age and the school at which they attend. Such candidates will be required to undergo a preliminary examination, with the view of ascertaining how far they are qualified to compete. The names of those who pass tho preliminary examination will be entered on a list as the candidates to be examined for Scholarships. The examinations will tako place at convenient central places, to be determined by the Board, and the candidates will be conveyed to and from such central places free of charge. The Board reserves to itself the right of requiring proof as to the age of any candidate. The subjects upon which candidates will be examined are as follows:— 1. For the two open Scholarships— Classics Mathematics History, sacred and profane Geography English composition. 2. For the four Scholarships to be competed for only by boys attending the district schools of the province aided by the Board: that is to say, all schools aided by the Board, with the exception of Christ's College Grammar Sohool, the High School, Christchurch, the High School, Lyttelton— Reading and spelling Writing, large text and small hand Arithmetic, as far as compound rules and reduction English grammar English composition History, sacred and profane Geography. The Scholarships gained last year will be continued to the present holders for another year, subject to the condition that the Board shall be satisfied with the progress they have made in their studies. A PREMIUM of £20 for the best sample, and £10 for the Becond best sample of Malting Barley, grown in Canterbury this season, will be given by the Christchurch Brewers' Association. The sample to be not less than three bushels. Must be sent in to the Town Hall, Christchuroh, by twelve o'clock on Saturday, the 13th of April next. CONDITIOKS : — To be entitled to the Ist prize, the grower must satisfy the Association that he has grown at least 300 bushels of the same quality; and for the 2nd prize, 100 bushels this season.
