[See " General Stud Book," or "New Zealand Stud Book."] Surplice (sire of the Bishop of Osnaburgh) by Touchstone, was the winner of the two great events of the Derby and Great St. Leger in 1848. The Bishop of Osnaburgh is a large and powerful black horse, and is a heavy weight carrier. He stands nearly sixteen hands, has a first-rate temper and constitution, and has never broken down. He was trained by the late Isaac Day, and his engagements were heavy. In 1855-56 he ran at Newmarket, Craven Meeting; Goodwood, Brighton, Newmarket First Spring Meeting, Ascot, Hampton, Newmarket July and Ist October Meetings, and was several times a winner, carrying successfully in two instances, when three years old, list, and lOst. 71bs.
