Miscellaneous. XAIAPOI LADIES , BOARDING SCHOOL. MBS. DEIGHTON bege to announoe that it is hor intention to open a Ladies* School at Kaiapoi after tho Easter holidays, when ehe will bo prepared to receive a limited number of boarders on moderate terms. Prospectuses can be had on application to Mb. Hughes, 3-20 Bookseller, Christchurch. BOARD OP EDUCATION. PUBLIC SCHOLARSHIPS. THE BOARD OP EDUCATION hereby give notice that in the month of Juno next, on days to bo specified in a future advertisement, Publio Examinations will be held by Examiners appointed by the Board, of Candidates desirous of competing for the above Scholarships, under the following regulations :— The Scholarships to be six in number, of the value of £40 each for one year, unless further appropriations are made by tho Pro* vincial Couucil. Two of thepe Scholarships will be open to all boys below twelve years of ago attending school in the province, whether public or private. The remaining four will be open only to boys below eleven years of ago attending district schools, aided by the Board. The proceeds of the Scholarships will be available only aa a contribution towards the expeneos of tuition, board, lodging, and other school expanses, at some school, to bo approved of by the Board. In cases where the successful candidates desire it, the Board will provide, in lieu of the above sum of £40, board, lodging, tuition, and washing, free of coot for one year, from the date of the emminution, at eonio school to be fixed by the Board. Those desiring to compote must report themselves as candidates in writing to tho Chairmnn of the Bourd, on or before tho 30th of April next, stilting their ago and tho school ut which they attend. Such candidates will be required to undergo a preliminary examination, with the view of ascertaining how far they are qualified to compete. The names of those who pass tho proliminury examination will be entered on >\ list as the candidates to bo examined for Scholarships. The examinations will take pluce nt convenient central places, to be determine*! by the Board, and the cutadidntce will ho conveyed to and from such central pieces fro: of i-harge. The Board reserves to itself the right of requiring proof as to the age of any candidate. The subjects upon which candidates will be examined are as follows :-— 1. For the two open Scholarships— Classics Mathematics History t 'eaored and profane Geography English composition. 2. For tho four Soholarehips to bo competed for only by boys attending the district schools of the province aided by the Board: that is to say, all schools aided by the Board, with the exception of Christ's College Grammar School, the High School, Chrietchurch, the High School, Lyttelton— Beading and spelling Writing, large text and email hand Arithmetic, ac far as compound rules and reduction English grammar English composition Hietory, eaored and profane Geography. The Scholarships gained last year will be continued to the present holders for another year, subject to the condition that tho Board shall be satisfied with the progress they havo made in their studies.
