LATEST TELEGRAMS.

(By Inter-Provincial Telegraph.) Dunedist, Friday, 4.55 p.m. The Tararua sails this evening for Canterbury with the English mails, and the Taranaki with the Panama mails. The public trial of the new fire- ' engiue " L'Extincteur" takes place to-night,

Nelson, Friday, 4.10 p.m. Arrived —Phoebe, from the north. Sailed—On the 18th, The Thane, for the West Coast; on the 20ch, the Kennedy, for the Grey and Hokitika ; and the Lord Ashley for the West Coast. The Maungatapu murderers were brought up for examination to-day; the circumstantial evidence was very strong. The independent testimony of Sullivan is not yet given. On a former occasion Jervey swore that the prisoners had bought articles at his store in Canvastown, which he wrapped up in a portion of the " Marlborough Press," dated he believed May 30. The evidence to-day went to show that the charge of the loaded gun was rammed down with a piece of the paper named, and that another part of the same paper was found containing some pepper taken by the prisoners from Canvastown; and another piece was found on the body of Matthieu. All these pieces fit together, and show that they are parts of the same paper. The prisoner Sullivan has been identified by a clerk in the New Zealand Bank as having sold gold to him on the 14th of June. The prisoners were remanded until Thursday, the 26th inst. Another fire occurred in Auckland on the 17th; a house was burnt down in Durham street. The fire is supposed to be the work of an incendiary.
