" Press " Office, Monday, July 9. The past week has not been lively in a business point of view, as traders have not purchased r heavily, only small lots of goods being bought in to assort stocks. The fourth of the month passed off better than was expected, the most r of the bills being promptly met, and credit tolerably sound. We have still to quote r several import articlos as short, notwithstanding recent arrivals. English cheese, bacon and hams, are in small supply, and quitted at high rates. Colonial cheese is easy at 112s t per cwt; colonial bacon and hams are coming , freely into the market, but are mostly offered , in too green a state to fetch full value, we • therefore quote prices as easier on that > account; 95s per cwt is the price offered, and in i most cases accepted. Euglish soap is high, ' and tallow is hard to purchase at 35s to 40s . per cwt. A fair demand exists for medium 1 teas. Sugars are very firm, and candles, full I- weights, maintain Is 6d to Is 7d per lb. i In the grain and flour trade some animation existed during the week, especially in the > former, and several sales of good milling i wheat have taken place at 5s per bushel. i iriour, superfine silk-dressed, has not, how- > ever, advanced beyond late quotations, viz., £16 per ton. Beans and sharps have moved off freely at £6 5s to £7 10s respectively. Beans are asked for in small quantities for seed purposes, but none are offering. Peas havo advanced in price, 5s to 5s 6d per bushel is offered for good samples. A considerable enquiry exists for oats, and 5s per bushel can be obtained for large quantities ; fino seed • samples fetch 6s. Hay is in fair supply to meet the demand, with no change in price ; ;£4 10s per ton, delivered. Potatoes are still a glut in tbe market. , A few milch cows and store cattle were offered on Saturday, but prices obtained were not higher than previous markets. Horses are very difficult to dispose of, except at low prices.
