Turner, Esq. npHE CHRISTCHURCH BENEVOLENT IJL AID SOCIETY has been eetablihed for the purpose of giving relief to persons in a state of temporary destitution in Christchurch and the neighborhood. Whilst attempts are occasionally made to impose upon the charitable by fictitious tales of distress, there are many cases of real want amongst those to whom it is less painful to suffer privation than to solicit alms. Although raoat of the distress at the present time arises from the long depression in trade, which has limited the means of employment, and from the numbers passing through Christchurch to and from the goldfields, it may be presumed that the colony has arrived at a state in which, a certain amount of distress will exist here as in all large towns, for the relief of which some permanent and systematic machinery is necessary. The Society proposes by a system of district visiting under the control and guidance of a central committee, at the same time to ascertain the real circumstances of every person applying or recomnfended for assistance, and to dispense the means placed at its disposal by the public for the relief of the destitute. A Provisional Committee has been formed to commence the work of the Society at once; but as soon as a sufficient number of subscribers shall have been enrolled, it is intended to call a meeting of the subscribers for the purpose of electing a permanent committee, and making such regulations for the conduct of the Society as experience may have shown to be necessary. The Society requests the aid of the public, either by donations or annual subscriptions. The latter to be paid half-yearly or quarterly, to meet the convenience of subscribers. Subscriptions will be received by any member of the Provisional Committee. I\7M. LEITH begs to inform his friends and customers that he has leased his Mill, Ac., to Mr. Milne, and he hopes that he will meet with the same liberal support that has been bestowed hitherto, and he is now ready to attend to any orders that may come in.
